Born in 1923 in Romania, Professor Schoenauer studied architecture in Budapest and later in Copenhagen, Denmark before immigrating to Canada in 1951. In Montreal he gained experience in several architectural offices before enrolling in a Master's Programme at McGill that would lead to a lifetime association with this University. Appointed as a sessional lecturer, his long academic career led to his appointment as Director of the School of Architecture and the Macdonald Chair. It has not only been filled with honours but has earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues and of several generations of students.

His tireless research in the field of Housing, resulted in the publication of several notable books that he illustrated with his own meticulous drawings. "6000 years of Housing" already translated into Spanish and Japanese was revised and re-issued last year by Norton Publishers. A gifted designer and Town Planner, Norbert Schoenauer was associated with professional parterns 1 in a number of prize winning competition entries and large scale projects that included the Master Plan and Housing for Fermont New Town in Labrador, Quebec, with Maurice Desnoyers. On two year leave of absence from McGill he was seconded to Cantral Mortgage and Housing Corporation as Executive Director producing the Master Plan and Housing Design for the Woodroffe Community of Nepean Township. Later he served as the Corporation's Senior Advisor on Planning and Design and acted as its representative on international agencies.

In 1995, Norbert Schoenauer's outstanding contribution to practice and education was recognized with the award of Medaille de by the Quebec Order of Architects followed in 1999 by the Distinguished Professor Award of the Associated Collegiate Schools of Architecture. He will long be remembered for his wise teaching, his thoughtful advice and for his generous and good humoured friendship.
